29 November 2012

We watched Howl's Moving Castle on Sunday night, on the couch, with popcorn and a cookie for each of us.  Afterwards, with the credits rolling, Nut Brown asked exuberantly, "Can we have a post-treat cookie?"

27 November 2012

It's official: we have a scooter!  Bobo can propel himself around the floor using his arms.  So he's happier for longer than ever to be on the floor because he can go places.  He still can't roll over, though, so when he's tired of being on the floor, he lays his head down and cries until someone picks him up.

He's gotten really good at sitting up, too, although we are still careful to make sure someone sits behind him to prevent head bangs.  On Sunday, Nut Brown got tired of being the designated Bobo-holder and tied his pillowpet on to Bobo's back so that Nut Brown could run off and play.  How responsible.  And creative.

26 November 2012

Just returned from a Thanksgiving trip to Iowa.  Mr. Brown made two turkeys and I made three pies and we consumed vast quantities of Thanksgiving treats.  The weather was unbelievable, although I couldn't pry my kiddos away from available cousins and electrionica to go outside except once.  (Yes, you heard me, playing outside in Iowa in late November - unheard of!)

The drive down and back went very very smoothly, much better than anticipated.  Bobo was resigned to sitting in his automotive torture device and didn't fuss as much as he might have.  We listened to the entirety of Howl's Moving Castle audiobook during the drive, and then watched the movie last night.  Both are wonderful, but I think it's fair to say that the movie is loosely based on the book, rather than attempting anything close to a strict interpretation.

19 November 2012

We have a superstition at our house about snowflakes.  We cut them from coffee filters early and hang them up in the hopes that the clouds won't send quite as much snow since we've already started it for them.  The children produced snowflakes the other day while I was at work, and hung them on the windows in the living room.  Nut Brown used the sticky hangers for Command hooks.

Rose Pink says, "People from America are Americans...
What do you call people from Canada?

15 November 2012

A couple months ago when Bobo was pretty new and we were all still adjusting to him, Mr. Brown told Nut Brown that he is very important because he is the glue that holds our family together.  Nut Brown has always been very concerned with making sure that every member of the family is included in everything and that we are all together - it's very sweet to see how much he loves his family.  We felt this love from him even when he was a tiny baby and couldn't talk yet.  Now, we can tell when Nut Brown feels happy and connected to us- he will walk around handing out 'glue' to everyone, binding us together.

13 November 2012

Yes, Nut Brown is wearing roller skates while pushing the baby's stroller.  He loves them (an inheritance from the girl next door) and asks to wear them almost every time we go out!

People often say that Bobo looks 'so much like his daddy!' or 'so much like Nut Brown!' but in my opinion he looks a lot more like Rose Pink.

Bobo loves magazines and 'reads' them very enthusiastically.  All that nice crinkly paper.  Rose Pink is reading a Family Circus collection to me.  The jokes are just enough that she understands them and so she really enjoys these books. (garage sales finds for a quarter! woo hoo!)

Yup, holding his own bottle!

12 November 2012

We just went and had family pictures made.  It was a lousy experience even though the kids and I had been anticipating it for a couple weeks.  The lady taking the photos made everybody fussy, not just the baby, and you can see the progression of increased irritation looking through the photos.

10 November 2012

There's been an outburst of writing around our house lately.  We discussed planning for our upcoming trip to Iowa and Nut Brown said, oh, I must make a list!  (Does he take after his mum or what?)  What's really funny is that he cut a piece of paper in strips and staple them together to make a very long piece of paper so he could have a list like Santa's list.  Then he started to write things on it, like 'snacks' and 'pillow'.  Rose Pink joined in and made a list of her own.

The next day, Nut Brown said to me, I've lost my list, so can I just bring anything I want?

I digress.  On Sunday Rose Pink drew a picture for a friend and wrote on it, color however you want.  And Nut Brown produced the above drawing, which in case you're wondering, is a rendering of Iron Man.

Lots of freestyle writing happening here.

Bobo Blessing

At the end of September, Mr. Brown gave Bobo a name and a blessing.  My parents and our friend BJ were there for the special occasion.  It was a lovely blessing (although Bobo followed established tradition by yelling for most of it) and I'm so glad that my husband could bless our baby.

Some post-blessing photos:

Rose Pink calls Bobo 'Fuzzy Top' sometimes

Also, because grandmas are so fun:

8 November 2012

The kids have this darling habit of pushing my car out of the driveway when they are up in the mornings when I leave for work.  I back up very slowly so that they think they are actually helping me and it's a sweet reminder of how much they love me.

7 November 2012

Last week while Rose Pink and Mr. Brown were at soccer practice, Nut Brown and I decided to take all the Chuck E. Cheese coins we could find in the house and go spend them all.  Here we are having a happy (free) evening.

5 November 2012

Halloween!

Rose Pink was a lobster.

Nut Brown was a ghost (recycled costume from three years ago, I can't believe he could still wear it!)

Bobo was a slug. (Thank you, Heather!)

Mr. Brown and I were a starry night and the moon.

They had quite a haul... eight and a half pounds.  The thing that amazes me is that the candy is just sitting in a bag in the living room and they don't get into it.  They're content to have some for dessert or as a reward for doing chores or homework or whatever, but it just sits there.  They're such good kids.

3 November 2012

Thanks to my friend Wendy, we now have an official name for the annual 'practice Thanksgiving' that we have - Fakesgiving!  This year we learned what deep fried turkey tastes like, discovered that biscuit stuffing tastes like Stovetop, and tried pumpkin gingerbread trifle - yum!

2 November 2012

Spencer's been reading Superfudge, by Judy Blume to the kids.  They LOVE it.  It's been especially fun to watch Nut Brown, because he identifies strongly with Fudge, who has an older brother and a new baby sister that he's not particularly happy about.  One of the unexpected fallouts from this book is that Nut Brown announced to us that he knows that his parents are Santa Claus.  Oy.  As parents, we were willing to play the game but not lie about it, so when he said, 'are you Santa Claus?' we said, 'yes'.  I guess I wasn't quite ready for that part of Christmas to be over with yet... It was a surprise and disappointment to Rose Pink as well.  So now we have no more magical visitors to our house at Christmas time.  I suppose we should make sure he doesn't go around telling his other little friends.
