Art by Rose Pink.

We just had a visit from Grandma and Grandpa, much to the delight of Rose Pink and Nut Brown, and not so much to Bobo's.  Eventually he warmed up to Grandma a bit, but he's still very stranger-suspicious and clingy.  I scared the pants off him by setting him down inside someone's house last night and running back out to the car to get the food we'd brought them (a two-handed maneuver).  He was not happy.  Anyway, we had a great visit with Grandma and Grandpa, and Rose Pink and Nut Brown are already planning their next trip to PA to see them.

They came just after a looooooong weekend for me: I took off a couple days along with Memorial Day and moved dirt around the backyard to fill beds, and planted seeds and so on. I like gardening.  I'm looking forward to finding out what comes up.

Mermaid and hammerhead shark, by Nut Brown.

We rode our bikes to the library together last week, me and Rose Pink and Nut Brown, with Bobo in the bike trailer.  It was Nut Brown's first time on a long-ish ride (previously the farthest he's been is to the park two blocks away).  He did great (although I wish he'd look for cars before he enters the intersection instead of when he's already off the sidewalk) and took great pleasure in riding faster than Rose Pink.  Her wheels may be bigger but he pedals much faster.  It was a lot of fun to ride together.  Next up, Jim's for ice cream!  I think it may actually be getting warm.

We're expecting my parents for a visit this weekend.  The kids love to see their grandparents.  When we went to visit them a couple months ago, they started packing as soon as they found out we were going - making neat piles of clothes, with labels, in the Watchtower and asking us for suitcases.  A week before we were supposed to leave, Mr. Brown said to me, I think Nut Brown needs more pants.  I replied, that's because most of his pants are set aside for the upcoming trip!  Tell him to look upstairs for more pants!

When they were here for Rose Pink's baptism in January, the kids made up the bed and drew on the windows for them.  I wish I could have photographed it, but here is what they wrote (along with a lovely drawing of Rose Pink getting baptized):

BAPTISUM

Welcome into owr home!!!

17 May 2013

Last night I was working the front yard digging up the lawn for a flowerbed in front of the porch.  Bobo was hanging out helping me- sitting in the dirt, digging with a plastic spade, making piles of dirt on the front porch, investigating suspicious-looking roots.... he does the same sort of companionable hanging out with Mr. Brown in the kitchen when he's making dinner - getting into the cupboards, asking to be picked up so he can see what's cooking.  It's very friendly and I really enjoyed my little helper while we were working together.  He's such a sweet baby.

16 May 2013

The other evening when Mr. Brown took Rose Pink to soccer practice, the boys and I headed for the park up the street.

ON OUR BIKES.
Here's Bobo being restrained in the bike stroller.  He was okay with it but not super impressed.

We had to cross a major road to get there, but Nut Brown handled it pretty well and no one died or slammed on their brakes.  Michigan drivers are really good about kids on bikes, as I learned when Rose Pink was learning to ride her bike on her own.

Nut Brown is crazy about monkey bars at the moment.  He went back and forth across these about thirty-seven times.

Joint sliding.  About two seconds after this photo, Rambo pushed Nut Brown's arm out of the way and pushed off down the slide by himself.  He likes slides.

Want to know a secret?  Bobo actually prefers Mr. Brown to me.

I forgot to write up when Bobo started walking: it was a couple weeks ago right before his first birthday.  He was pretty excited about it but I wasn't actually ready for him to grow out of crawling yet.  I love how noisy he is when he crawls- he slaps the floor every time he moves his hands and I think it's so funny.  However, he has been avidly practicing walking and is getting quite accomplished.  He can't stand himself up when he falls down but I'm sure he'll learn soon.

At the park the other day, he walked from the bench where we were sitting over to the edge of the playground.  We expected that he'd be stymied by the boards around the edge, but no, he climbed right over and toddled off towards the playground equipment.  Good for him.

10 May 2013

Last Sunday we discovered that Bobo and Nut Brown were dressed alike- blue shirts, black pants.  Mr. Brown joined the fun and we immortalized the moment.

So Rose Pink and I decided that if we couldn't dress like the boys, we could dress like each other, so we both wore teal.  Nut Brown immortalized that moment for us as well.

Rose Pink tells a joke, and Mr. Brown laughs and says, "You're funny."  She replies, "I get it from my dad."

8 May 2013

The kids' bikes have had some various problems with losing their chains, so two Saturdays ago I got out some tools and we all sat down in the driveway to tinker.  Everyone got involved in their own way- Rose Pink took her chain guard off all by herself to help me, Nut Brown fiddled with the pedals on his bike, and the baby banged on the frame with a crescent wrench.  We fixed the bikes and everyone was just playing with the tools and the upside-down bikes, so I put the new tube and tire back on the other adult bike so hopefully we can get out as a family together at some point this summer.  It was a nice afternoon and fun to be all engaged together.

It's soccer season again!

Rose Pink and Nut Brown are both playing.  Going to the games is really fun.  They have both struggled this season for various reasons, and I'm not sure that Nut Brown is going to play again in the fall.  He's not particularly aggressive and gets offended when some of the other players are.  But overall Mr. Brown and I are enjoying it, and they do too.

Even Bobo gets into it.  He knows what soccer balls are for and he kicks them around the sidelines at the games and practices.

3 May 2013

Nut Brown has gotten more and more confident on his bike and ventured his first ride around the block.  It was successful enough that he asked impatiently if he could ride around the block by himself on an afternoon when I couldn't go with him because the baby was napping.

You would think I've learned my lesson about letting my children roam free, but apparently I haven't because I said okay, after we'd discussed what he would do if he fell off and remembered how to watch for cars backing out of driveways.  (He's very good at this while walking, so I wasn't too worried.)

So off he went, and I sat on the front porch and worried until he came around the corner and shouted, Mama!  Now he asks every day if he can ride around the block and says to me, 'Riding my bike is fun, Mama.'  He'll take off and when he comes back around he says, 'one more time?' and I say, 'okay', and off he goes again without even stopping.  He learned on his own to restart when he falls off, first from leaning against a car or a fence, and now he can start flat.  Sometimes he makes it all the way around without having to stop at all.
