26 December 2014

Now we're post-Christmas, Rose Pink is thinking about her birthday in a couple weeks.  She says, I want vampire teeth for my birthday.  (She's admiring a gift Nut Brown received from Grandma and Grandpa)  Bobo comes and leans on my knee and uses all his most beguiling tricks and asks, "I want birthday.  Please?"

Okay, I say.  You can have one soon.  (He'll be three in April.)

17 December 2014

Funny times at the Brown house:

Bobo: Papa!  Joke!
Mr. Brown: Okay!  Knock knock!
Bobo: Knock knock!
Mr. Brown: Who's there?
Bobo: Who's there?
Mr. Brown: Doris!
Bobo: Doris!
Mr. Brown: Doris who?

Mr. Brown built a bench to go with the table in the living room.  It's very very nice, and he just finished painting it white yesterday and brought it up for use.

Rose Pink: It's too bad about your new bench, Papa.  It's already got finger prints and bum prints on it.

Mr. Brown: I know... I was kind of...

Nut Brown: ... bummed?

Bobo: Mama!  Joke!
Mama: Okay!
Bobo: Knock knock!
Mama: Who's there?
Bobo: Ummmm... Max's turn?

16 December 2014

The other night when I went in to turn off the tree in the boys' room, I discovered that they were both up in Nut Brown's bunk going to sleep.  They weren't quite asleep yet, so I convinced them to move the slumber party down to Bobo's bunk.  (Bobo climbs the ladder pretty well when he's awake, but I wouldn't think much of his chances in the middle of night half-asleep.)  For the next several nights they've curled up together in Bobo's bunk every night.

15 December 2014

Last Tuesday, Bobo fell asleep at 5 pm.  So after Nut Brown and Mr. Brown went off to gymnastics, Rose Pink and I got out the beads and played with making jewelry.  Last time Gia came, she brought us some fabulous strings of beads and we got those out and fooled around with them for awhile in different arrangements.  Rose Pink and I had a good time.  Also the following conversation:

Rose Pink: We're not the same!  Nothing's the same!

Mama: You're right.  I'm putting a clasp on, and you're taking one off.  Also you're using glass pearls and I'm not!  But you know what they say... two negatives make a positive.

Rose Pink: Well, we are both making jewelry.

I love her so much!

13 December 2014

We've had a busy Christmas season so far, but we've done a lot of fun stuff.  We hosted Advent once at our friends' house, and then we hosted it again at the church before the annual Christmas Devotional broadcast from Salt Lake.  This week we're going to a choir concert on Sunday evening and the next week will be the last Advent evening.  The kids and I went to the city tree lighting downtown (free hotdogs) but had to leave before the tree was lit, which was a bit of a bummer.  But we rode our bikes!  Today was the Christmas breakfast at church, and this afternoon we had a cookie making fest with a friend.

I've had some work Christmas parties to attend.  The kids have bought and wrapped their gifts for each other, and Mr. Brown and I have made plans for filling stockings.  All the decorations are up at our house, and we're planning on a secret Santa for a family in our ward.  Plus we have three advent calendars to help us count down.  So it's been busy, but not too much work and it's been so much fun!
I'm so happy with life.  I have so much to look forward to, even after Christmas.  God has been good to me.

12 December 2014

Lately Mr. Brown has been helping the kids practice handwriting by copying poems.  Rose Pink (who has lately been staying up past when Mr. Brown and I go to bed) came downstairs the other night to show us her own efforts at poetry.

3 December 2014

Rose Pink had an activity at church that she was supposed to bring a costume for.  She made her own samurai armor from an amazon box.

2 December 2014

Thanksgiving was really nice this year.  We planned with our friends the Scotts to go up to their parents' lake house, but when they got there, there was a serious water leak in the wall so those plans changed!  (Good thing we made those plans - otherwise they wouldn't have found the leak for awhile)  We went over to their house on Thanksgiving morning and hung out all day, ate dinner and pie and played games.  It was nice, pretty quiet, and good fun.

On Saturday the kids and I put up the Christmas decorations.  Bobo doesn't remember Christmas from last year and he's totally enchanted by the Christmas tree.  It's so sweet to see how excited he is by all this 'new' fun stuff.  Mr. Brown is being a good sport about it, but three days later he's already tired of the Christmas decorations.  We're still working on a happy medium here.

29 November 2014

The other evening Bobo was riding in the front seat of Flash into the garage (we let him out of his carseat for the last five feet in, since we have to get out to open the garage door).  When the car stopped, he jumped up and reached up to fold down the sun visor to look in the mirror on the back, and exclaimed, "Picture! Me! Picture! Me!"

I'm thankful for my husband.

On his birthday this year, Rose Pink gave him this certificate:
along with a coupon for his favorite:

25 November 2014

Rose Pink and Nut Brown, when they say the same thing, immediately begin to say, "jinx, drinks, jink, drinks, jinx, drinks" to each other until they determine that one of them has 'won'.

This morning Bobo came and got in bed with Mr. Brown and listened to Christmas music on the radio and fell back asleep with him.

Mornings are when my boys are at their sweetest.  Nut Brown actually said to me the other day that he likes Bobo best in the morning, and it's no wonder (I do too) because he wakes up in such a sweet temper and is funny and kind and so fun to be with.  The other morning he and Nut Brown made 'tepees' on the bottom bunk by hanging blankets from the bottom of the top bunk mattress and played together for quite awhile before coming to wake us.

24 November 2014

Nut Brown and Bobo were playing together the other day.

Nut Brown: Bobo, this will be our temple.
Bobo: Temple?
Nut Brown: Of doom!
Bobo: Of doom?

He started filling in 'of doom' when we'd read scriptures in the evening.  'And the prophets preached the word ' "OF DOOM!"  They came to the land "OF DOOM!"  He offered a prayer "OF DOOM!"  It's been pretty hysterical.

22 November 2014

Rose Pink just went through a phase where she discovered how to get the curly hair she's always wanted.  She stood very still at night and let me braid her hair in cornrows.  I liked it too.

20 November 2014

Bobo discovers we own two copies of one of his favorite books.  He sat on the floor in the hall pointing at them saying, 'same! same!'

Rose Pink made origami dinners for all of us - paper food on paper plates, and paper drinks in paper cups.

13 November 2014

Bobo is still doing that cute thing where he turns 'sp' into 'ps', as in, 'Psiderman'.  Nut Brown says to me, 'What do you get if you put together Pus-man and Cider-man?'  I say, no idea.  He says, "Psiderman!" which is one of Bobo's favorite tv shows right now.

Reading scriptures the other night, Nut Brown looked at 'repenteth' and read 'reppenteeth?'  We all looked at it for a minute and he said, 'You can see the teeth at the end.'

October 2014

October was a crazy month for us for so many reasons.  At the beginning Gia came to visit us over General Conference weekend, and we went to an apple orchard with her and watched conference and enjoyed that very much.  Mr. Brown and I read The Feminine Mystique for book club and spent the month feeling out a new way to be married (that was very hard work).  Also there was the ward Halloween dance, which was super fun.  And my job moved from one military base to another so now I have a 40-minute commute in the car instead of on my bike, which was a big adjustment.  Then there was the clothing distribution project at church that I was the deputy organizer for, and that kind of ate our lunch for a full week, but it was still rewarding to give out literally tons of clothing to people who really needed it.  We did cow eye dissections with some homeschool friends and an eye doctor from church, super fun!  Then it was Halloween.  So here are some photos from Halloween because I didn't take any the rest of the month.

Rose Pink mostly carved her pumpkin by herself!  I helped Nut Brown- his is a representational Lego Chima scene.  Everything is Lego Chima for him.   I carved Bobo's for him, although he had his hand on the knife for part of it.  Here are the finished products:

Costumes: Nut Brown wanted to be a Lego Chima phoenix.
Rose Pink is Hawk Girl (DC comics character)
She initially asked to be a centaur, but although I wanted very much to make that costume, I didn't think I had enough time.  I told her she could be a centaur next year if she's willing to commit in March.

Bobo was (no surprises here)... Batman.  Because that's what he tells you his name is if you ask him.  Because he will only willingly wear Batman shirts.  And also because we have five Batman costumes in the house.  And now that he's discovered that we own Batman capes, we have a hard time convincing him to take them off for bed.
Mr. Brown was a creepy guy handing out candy.  We didn't have a lot of trick-or-treaters, so his effort was not appreciated as much as it might have been!
It was cold and rainy that night, so the kids didn't want to stay out as long as they usually do, but they still came home with quite a haul.  We poured theirs in with the candy we didn't give to the trick-or-treaters that didn't come.

27 September 2014

Tonight Rose Pink and I went to the General Women's Meeting of our church together.  I really enjoyed going with her.  She complained about having too many friends there - she didn't know who to talk to.  She's just like her mother - I don't do well when more than one of my friends is around either.  Not a crowd person!  On the way home, she said, "My eyelids are so heavy they feel like they have ten-pound weights on them.  Well, maybe five pounds."

26 September 2014

Something Bobo says a lot lately: "DO IT!" meaning, I do it, not you.

Something he used to do but doesn't any more: when getting ready for bed, he'd get his diaper changed and then stand on the bed and hold my fingers and jump up and down like a crazy baby.  Now he's too big to need Mama's assistance for jumping - he just jumps on the bed by himself like a crazy baby.

25 September 2014

End of summer.  Some of the fruits of the garden - they are so vibrantly colored.
Our sole pumpkin this year.  Unfortunately it spoiled before we could do anything with it.

Rose Pink made up dolls just like Grandma taught her from the flowers on the tree next door.  She added an extra petal and this doll is carrying a fan.

Fall means soccer starts!  Rose Pink is number eight.  Her previous team dissolved so she's no longer a Honeybee, she's a Griffon.  Gryphon?  Griffin?  Not sure how it's spelled.

Her games and practices give the rest of us time to play outside, at least while the weather's still nice.
Tonight at practice we teamed up with another family and played 'capture the castle' on the playground while Rose Pink was chasing balls with her team.  My throat is sore from shouting "You shall not pass!"

Sometimes cuteness just cannot be denied.  Bobo wants to be like Mom and floss.

16 Sept 2014

Some favorite songs of Bobo's lately: Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee, and Itsy Bitsy Spider, which he calls, 'Psider'.  When he does the actions with me, his psider always leaps from the top of the waterspout and shouts, Yah!

He and I had a good wrestle at a friend's house on their carpeted floor.  We used to wrestle more when we had carpeted floors at home.

15 September 2014

Nut Brown, at dinner:  Mom, you're my favorite type of meat.

Me: I am?

Nut Brown: Yes, because you're all made of meat and you're my favorite!

Rose Pink, in the car: Have you ever had a little pinch where something zipped by and bit you?  That's a Kuka Luka biting you.

Bobo: Homp Homp.

Mr. Brown woke me in the middle of the night the other night and said, "Having completed that task, what does the party do now?"  I mumbled something, being not quite awake, and he said, "Great.  The party moves down the hall further into .... " and fell silent.  He was playing D&D with me in his sleep!

In Nut Brown's Sunday School class we were talking about gifts our Heavenly Father has given us, and Nut Brown's first gift was, 'A Very Kind Dad.'

6 September 2014

Bobo loves superheroes, and he has several Batman shirts and one Superman shirt that he loves to wear.  Last Saturday, Bobo was looking at an image of Kim Possible.  I said, 'That's Kim Possible.  She's... a superhero.'  He looked at his shirt, which had a fish on it, and said, 'oh. fish.'  Then he looked at me and said, "I hero."  And I agreed that he was.

5 September 2014

It's been hot for several days and the cold front with associated thunderstorms was scheduled to come through this evening.  After dinner the kids and I were getting ready to ride up to Sonic for slushes, and it sure did look like rain.  We discussed and decided to go anyway.  We made it to Sonic and ordered our slushes, and then watched the front come through - the sky turned black, and there was this tremendous wind and pounding rain.  Fortunately Sonic had a portico that we hung out under, so we didn't get terribly wet.  It passed after about twenty minutes, and we rode home in a very light drizzle (and in the dark).  It was all very exciting.  Nut Brown thought in the end that the slush was not worth getting wet for, but Rose Pink thought that it was just fine.  Bobo was nervous about the storm but was very brave on my lap.

5 September 2014

Rose Pink: Mom, which would be better for you, grass or dirt?

Nut Brown: If I had to pick, I'd choose dirt, because there's more likely to be food in it.  Like carrots.  Or potatoes.

1 September 2014

We having potatoes for dinner and Nut Brown says, "Potatoes are like cows underground.  You know, butter?  On potatoes?"

Bobo woke up early at 6:30 and got out of bed carrying all his bedding (pillow, boppy, train blanket) and came out to ask me to put him back in bed.  He does this almost every night when he's going to bed - gets out of bed and brings everything with him so I can tuck him back in.  Anyway, this morning he was still sleepy that I put him back in bed with all his blankets and sang him a song, and when I gave him kisses and said, I love you, he smiled at me and nodded.

31 August 2014

For some reason, Rose Pink has taught Bobo to use 'eggy' at the end of sentences.  I think she was trying to make him call her 'Eggy'.  Anyway, Bobo now will give you commands and follow them up with 'eggy!'

"Sit down, eggy!"

"Get up, eggy!"

"Let go, eggy!"

29 August 2014

We zipped up to the Dream Cruise on Saturday afternoon.  We couldn't find my aunt and uncle when we got there, although we found her Mustang in the parking lot.  Right after I took this photo, they came back from wherever they'd been.  The kids monopolized the camera and took a couple hundred photos of awesome vehicles.  Let me know if you want to see any.

We rode our bikes up to meet them, and then rode over to our friends the Truskies, where we played for a couple hours.  While we were gone in Wisconsin, Royal Oak had some serious flooding, and the Truskies checked our house for us.  Although every other home in the neighborhood had several inches of water in the basement, ours was comparatively dry.  We're grateful for that blessing and grateful for good friends looking out for us while we were gone!

28 August 2014

Last night, reading a book to Bobo.

Mama: What's this, Bobo?
Bobo: Chicken!
Mama: It's a duck.
Bobo: Chicken.
Mama: Okay.  What does a chicken say?
Bobo: Duck!

(I think he was trying for 'cluck')

27 August 2014

The other night in car on the way home from the Truskies, Nut Brown saw a sign that said 'Berkley Square' and read "Bakery Squirrel?"  He and Rose Pink were batting around the idea of squirrels that bake when Bobo suddenly used his deep baby voice to say, "Hi Roko.  Hi Roko.  Hi Roko.  Hi Roko...." over and over until she acknowledged him.  It made me laugh.

26 August 2014

Nut Brown had his seventh birthday while we were on vacation.  He wanted a Lego Chima party, so we had a pinata...
(Kregger the crocodile masquerading as a ninja turtle)

...which was thoroughly defeated.

The kids also explored the 'magical hall of chi'.  My sister and I blew up eighty balloons, some of which had blue glass rocks in them.  They took turns popping the balloons to find and collect chi.  Totally great.

And of course there was cake and presents.  For some reason Nut Brown received Lego toys.  He was delighted.  So was Bobo.

Happy happy birthday, Nut Brown!

24 August 2014

Last night Nut Brown and Rose Pink came up from downstairs at 10:30 pm to sing me three new verses they had made up for 'Oh You Can't Get To Heaven'.  Two involved dynamite.  I love it when they are having fun together.  Today Rose Pink gave a talk in Primary and when she got temporarily stuck, Nut Brown cued her from the audience.  He loves her so much and really wanted her to succeed.

Yesterday we had an unplanned surprise birthday party for Nut Brown.  He'd been asking for a 'friend party' and I told him he couldn't have one that day because I hadn't invited anyone.  But the Truskies were coming over anyway so Mr. Brown and I pooled our resources and had a party anyway.  We did the same games we played in Wisconsin and even found the same pinata, but this time the kids opted to punch it to death instead.  Nut Brown was surprised and felt very special, and I was really glad.  He's such a sweet boy.

23 August 2014

We spent a week in Door County, WI, on Lake Michigan, with most of my siblings, my parents, and all the cousins.  I'm pretty sure I only saw my kids when they were hungry, and I know for a fact that there not many baths taken by any of the kids that week.  It was a great place to stay and we all enjoyed the canoes.
