We drove up to Charleston, SC for the eclipse and stayed the weekend with our friends the Peers, who very conveniently moved to Charleston this summer! We left later than we planned because Bobo needed unplanned dental work that resulted in a crown for him, but arrived really late Friday night. Saturday afternoon we went to the beach and celebrated Nut Brown's tenth birthday. The beach was amazingly awesome, and I resolved to put together a beach bin so we can definitely make beachgoing part of our life here. We had so much fun playing in the waves and in the sand and sifting for shells. Plus no sunburns!
Sunday we went to church and swam in the pool in the evening, and then Monday was eclipse day! We sat out in the parking lot to watch the sun get slowly covered up, and then be completely darkened. There were some clouds where we were, but the storm held off until after the eclipse. It was amazing - we all screamed when it got dark. The streetlights came on and a bat came out and flew around. The whole experience was worth the 14 hours of driving time. We've already called our friends in Dallas and told them to expect us in 2024.
The drive back was not as bad as I thought it might be - there was definitely heavy traffic out of Charleston going south, and it was slow but no serious delays. What a fabulous experience! We were at the end of our first week in our new house, and it was really hard to break away from unpacking and settling in to drive out of town, but I am so glad we went.
