31 August 2024

Nut Brown has been running a D&D group this summer, with two weekly sessions.  The last session was last Thursday night.  Mr. Brown and I were sitting in the living room upstairs when the sound of singing came from the basement.  That's right... teenage boys were singing!

One of them wanted a bonus to his Strength score so they sang, I'll Make A Man Out Of You (from Mulan). Another asked for treasure, and they sang "Over the Misty Mountains" and Nut Brown gave them a treasure... map.  And the last friend wanted to resurrect another player character, so they sang "Supernatural". It was so fun!

Benefits of working from home - Rosebud hanging out with me while working in her math book.  She and D both had math books this summer that they worked in.  Rosebud wanted to learn multiplication and D wanted to work ahead in algebra.

24 August 2024

Rose Pink is studying for the ACT, and D is helping her with her math questions and enjoying it immensely. They finished the quiz they were working on and were pleased by the score- Rose Pink announced, "90%!"  D said, "That was mostly me.  You were probably the other ten percent."  He likes math, and he's good at it.  It's fun to see the two of them working together.

21 August2024

Happy birthday, Nut Brown!  He was gone at camp the week of his birthday, so we made sure to celebrate when he got home.  (We sent a birthday present with D to camp as well so he had something to mark his special day!)

We started with cheesecake and candles with our friends the Bloods.  Their youngest helped Nut Brown with his candles.

For his birthday dinner, he wanted to go to Golden Corral and eat as much as he wanted.  So we did!  He loved the shirt that his grandparents sent.

He also loved the hoodie that Mr. Brown and I got for him. He chose it, but it was on the expensive side and I think that he wasn't certain that we would get it for him.  So smiles all around there!  D also gave him a birthday gift - going halves on a new video game.  Rose Pink and Rosebud went shopping with me for the birthday gift for camp - we went to Five Below and got him annoying gag toys and some candy and a t-shirt.  We love you, Nut Brown!  Many happy returns of the day!

20 August 2024

The boys went camping with their church group at Assateague State Park, where they engaged in fun activities like throwing dead horseshoe crabs back in the ocean...

Surf fishing...

splashing and swimming

digging in the sand... (they fortified an area of the beach like Captain Moroni, but then the rangers made them take it down)

riding quad cycles around Ocean City...

paddle boarding...

hanging out with the young women for a day when they came down...

ocean fishing...

...other stuff...

water park in Ocean City...

picking up beach trash for service...

more water and sand play...

being hot and sunburned... (D had the opportunity to learn the lesson about sunscreen personally)

It was Nut Brown's birthday while they were gone, and we put together a bag of silly gifts for him that D snuck out to surprise him with. His leaders made sure that he was celebrated that day too!

The boys had been cautious about going, and we had to buy a lot of camping supplies last minute because they decided the week before departure that they actually did want to go. When they came home, they said that "the fun outweighed the discomfort" (Nut Brown) and "I really like camping!" (D). I am had that they had such a good time!

The rest of us had a quiet week at home. D had been in a STEM day camp the week before and Rosebud really missed him, so I lined up daily playdates for her so she wasn't lonely.  We also met up spontaneously with half of the Blood family (who also sent people to camp) for a picnic dinner at soccer practice.  And ice cream after!

15 August 2024

Catching up on several items from the last couple of months.

Sitting around the fire (Mr. Brown has made an effort to have cookouts in Mondays this summer) and we were answering Trivial Pursuit questions that Rose Pink was asking. She asked who invented the first flying airship, and Rosebud bursts out, "Led Zeppelin!"

Here's my note to remember the afternoon that Rosebud and I spent an hour or two at the creek across the street catching fish. The fish are about an inch long and she had a very small box with a magnifying glass in the lid that she would out them in when she caught them. It was quiet and nice.

When we play word games at the table, Rose Pink brings her enormous ancient dictionary. I think it was published in 1842 and it's about four inches thick.

One night for Family Home Minute when we were tallying the score from the board game, it looked more and more like D might win. Usually Nut Brown wins, and D got more and more excited. When it was official that he'd won, he was so ecstatic that he ran up and down the hallway screaming "I'm the top banana! I'm the top banana!"

One morning, Rose Pink asked Mr. Brown what genre he would classify a particular song by Savage Garden in. He ruminated and answered her. It turned out that she and her significant other Riley had a bet on about how he would answer, and Riley won!

The other night at dinner during a pause in the conversation, D passed gas kind of loudly. Nut Brown said calmly, "Well, that was a real cheek-clapper." It cracked me up so much that I laughed for five minutes. He didn't think that his comment was that funny, and followed up with, "Sometimes a good cheek-clapper is a good knee-slapper!" He is so funny!

Another thing that I found hilarious that completely mystified Nut Brown was a video he and I were watching that was a live stream of a Minecraft player. A huge storm appeared on the horizon and the sky turned black, and people began to run away and hide. A few players continued fishing in a lake, and the streamer shouted, "Guys! Guys! The fish can wait!" For some reason that tickled me, so now I say it to the kids periodically for no good reason.
