3 July 2021

We spent last week in Galveston with my brother and his family and my sister and her family.  Lots of cousins and lots of mayhem.  We rented a house with five bedrooms to stay in together, and although it was not as nice as we expected, it was adequate, and it was good enough that we had fun together.  We all arrived on Monday night, and my brother and his wife made dinner- stir fry with a positively tremendous amount of rice.  It turned out to be enough rice for two additional meals.  Tuesday we went to the Space Center in Houston, which was really cool, even if we had to drive through a hurricane to get there.  We got to ride out to Rocket Park and check out the Saturn V rocket there, and touch the moon rock.  Everyone else was done by about 3 pm although I wasn't ready to leave yet.  (sigh)

Wednesday we went to the BEACH and spent most of the day there.  The beach was only a few minutes' walk from the house, which was really great.  We ended up way south of Galveston city on Galveston Island, which was great because the beaches were very uncrowded.  I was also glad to discover that the City of Galveston has made all of the shoreline public beaches, with periodic access points.  Very convenient and friendly.

The beach had lots of waves, which was really fun.  The kids played in the waves and played in the sand and we all got dreadfully sunburned.  So on Thursday we stayed home, applied aloe, took ibuprofen and enjoyed the Netflix subscription.

Friday we suited up again and went to Schlitterbahn Galveston, a water park.  It was so much fun!  It has three lazy rivers - one that is lazy, one that is rapids, and one that is a wave pool + lazy river.  I think we spent most of our time there in the rivers, although there was some water slide riding as well. Nobody drowned although Bobo attempted it by failing to get in his tube for the rapids lazy river.  Fortunately my sister grabbed him as he floundered past her tube and tragedy was averted.  I stood in line with Rose Pink for almost an hour to ride a "water coaster" and good grief that was frightening.  She loved it!  We all had a wonderful time and were extra careful with the sunscreen so no further burns were incurred.

Saturday my brother departed (amid drama about being late, their rental car not starting, and then my brother mixing up positive and negative posts and almost starting a fire with the jumper cables), and the rest of us hung around the house.  My sister and I took the kids to the beach around 3 pm for one last visit.  And then we all left early Sunday morning for our respective drives home. It was great to see each other, and check out how much everybody's kids have grown up.
