Happy birthday, Rose Pink! Six years old!

She got up this morning and came in the bathroom and looked in the mirror and said, "I guess I'm not any taller."

This evening we gave her our gifts and she was very pleased and excited. Nut Brown had chosen a Mulan barbie, which she was totally excited about, and Mr. Brown gave her a fashion designer drawing kit thing, which she spent thirty minutes playing with after dinner. I gave her a bathrobe, which was also very happily received. (Thank you for the hand-me-down, Amanda!)

Tomorrow- her first dance class at the rec center, and the fancy party!

Rose Pink and I have decided to throw her a "Fancy Nancy" birthday party this Saturday. Today we made invitations for it. I cut out and wrote on, and she sewed the butterfly bodies and did the antenna. Also she further enhanced with delicate spirals.

There will be manicures. There will be pedicures. There will be nibbles with fancy toothpicks. There will be a fashion show.

Nut Brown and Mr. Brown are planning a trip to Chuck E Cheese for the duration.

Birthday Balloons

Rose Pink felt that she didn't have enough balloons for her birthday, so Mr. Brown bought several packages a couple days later. Balloons are even more fun in the winter because static electricity is even more readily available. And here's a shot of the birthday girl with her cake. We had pink ice cream to go with the pink cake.

14 January 2010

Happy 5th birthday, Rose Pink! Mr. Brown has been walking around saying, I can't believe it's been five whole years. We are so, so amazed by our daughter, how clever and quick she is, how beautiful. A special thank you to grandparents who sent gifts and others who remembered her to make it a very special day for her. Mr. Brown reports that she spent the entire day saying, This is the best birthday ever!

Her friend Macayla's birthday was in December, and at the party this little girl opened a mountain of presents. Rose Pink was clearly impressed with the tremendous pile, so I was a little anxious about the much more modest celebration that we had planned. We bought her a scripture carrier and ironed on some pretty patches, gave her a triple combination, bought a box of three flashy barbie dresses, and rounded up a few dollar gifts: some stickers, a coloring book, some pink M&Ms. She was very happy with our gifts to her, and Mr. Brown says that the day after she was still thanking him for all her nice presents and really enjoying all of them. What a relief. And I'm so glad that we gave her things she likes.

It's been ten and eleven hour days for the past two weeks for me at work, but my team members insisted that I leave at four on her birthday and not come back. I have a really great team. And I was grateful not to have to miss celebrating with her.

Nut Brown remembers his last birthday, and was pretty excited about this one. He helped us hang up the birthday banner (the same one we bought for Rose Pink's first birthday) and reminded Rose Pink several times the night before that her birthday was tomorrow. He sang "Happy Birthday" at the top of his lungs- so darling! And he was very resigned when he realized that he didn't actually get to open any presents. Also he consumed large quantities of pink cake.

Rose Pink asked for kissel (rhubarb strawberry soup) for her birthday as well as the cake. Nut Brown was very excited to have some, shouting, "Kissel pease! Kissel for me! Kissel pease!" He took a big spoonful, and said immediately, "I hate kissel." Yes, vocabulary is growing.

14 August 2009

Nut Brown sat very still while we sang Happy Birthday last night- he is unfamiliar with this custom and wasn't sure how to act. But then he blew out his candles and thoroughly enjoyed his cake and ice cream. Rose Pink gave him two toy cars whose doors open. He was so interested in those that he didn't want to open his other gifts. Eventually he consented, however, and opened a book about trucks with moving parts from Grandma and Grandpa and a toy that blows balls up in the air to be chased from his parents. Also toy where you hit balls with a plastic hammer and they run through a maze. Quite a birthday- he was fascinated with all of them.

We had guests for dinner and were talking after he had finished eating, so he got down and put his shoes on and headed for the sliding door. "Oh," I say, "Are you going outside?" Nut Brown nods and says, "side" and reaches for the door handle. "We are about to have cake and ice cream," I say. Without missing a beat, he turns around and heads for the kitchen. "Cake," he says.

happy birthday!

Today is Nut Brown's birthday. He is TWO and if you ask him how old he is, he says, "Du!" and holds up his hand with his index and middle fingers crossed. (We have been practicing.)
